Well I know I have not been updating this website regularly but do keep in mind that this site is still active and always will be. Once again I really appreciate all fans/visitors for showing their love and support for this blog. Thank you for that and by the way Shreya became the youngest indian singer to reach 10,000 tweeps last week. Congrats to her for that.

Who went for Shreya's concert at Sydney Opera House?

She came, she sang and she conquered once again. It was Shreya Ghoshal's maiden visit to Sydney and she wowed the audience with her mind-blowing performance last Sunday, 14th September.

It was nearly full-house at Sydney's world famous Opera House. Needless to say, the audience was thrilled to have their requested songs sang spontaneously by Shreya. One can safely say that she has a knack for connecting well with the audience as well as with the musicians and that's what makes a fine performer. Everyone was well entertained throughout the 3.5 hour concert as Shreya Ghoshal belted out soulful numbers as well as peppy ones with full exuberance.

Fans were so excited that most of them stayed back to have a photo/word or simply an autograph but did not have the opportunity to do so as she was unable to stay behind. Some fans had the chance though as they waited at the carpark for her to come out. According to one of her musicians, she was not feeling well and that could be the reason for her not being able to receive her fans. Nevertheless, she effortlessly managed to squeeze in as many songs as possible within the time allocated much to everyone's satisfaction. Her next concert, will still be in Australia and this time, it will be happening in the Arts Centre, Hamer Hall, Melbourne on September 20th at 6pm. Let's all hope that she fully recovers by then.

Melodious notes to take note

Imagine a girl, barely 10 years old, weaving her way into the hearts of thousands through a TV singing competition. Imagine again the same girl, now a sprightly 14, spellbinding TV audiences with an ambrosial voice one just couldn’t get enough of and winning the music competition by trouncing participants a good many years older. This girl is soon earmarked for further heights of success and sure enough at the age of 18 is given a huge break by an offbeat pair of film and music directors – the music is an unprecedented success and the Hindi film industry finally hears someone worthy of receiving the baton from yesteryear greats like Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhonsle. Now imagine that girl, all of a youthful and exuberant 22, sweeping the audience off their feet at one of the premier concert venues in the world. This is the short but exhilaratingly true story-so-far of Shreya Ghoshal – a talent par excellence, a classy stage performer exuding equipoise and supreme self-confidence, and most heartening to note, a wonderfully gracious person for whom the audience is a cherished friend and ally who craves only her nectarine musical notes.

Shreya Ghoshal’s performance at the Esplanade Concert Hall in Singapore on April 30, 2006, should go down in musical annals as one of the most assured stage performances ever – and perhaps the best for a performer under 25. We are talking about a cavernous venue seating 1800 people, where the patron in the furthest seat is perched at a good 20 metres from and four storeys above the stage – a stage graced by some of the top musicians, vocalists, dancers and philharmonic orchestras from around the world. In short, a stage set for overwhelming a young first-timer. Yet out came Shreya, with a spring in her step and a dazzle in her smile, wearing an angelic blue gagra-choli that reveals a dint of her obvious nubile allure, stunning the audience just like she did 6 years ago in Devdas with the enchanting Silsila Ye Chahat Ka. The audience sufficiently zapped, Shreya began weaving a web of pitch-perfect notes, delicate passages, enticing nuances, and lively chatter. Catching on the audience’s preference for old songs, Shreya launched on a nostalgic medley of Geeta Dutt melodies. The audience has now well and truly surrendered to her irresistible charm, not unlike a precocious child at a party pulling her “uncles’” and “aunties’” heartstrings as they were a fiddle.

Fiddle indeed she did along with the Deepak Pandit (an upcoming music composer from Mumbai) on the electric violin in an inspired Hindustani-jazz fusion jugalbandi (musical dialogue, in this instance between Shreya’s velvety vocals and Deepak’s electrifying violin) based on Rag Misra Jog. Her “filmi” credentials established, this composition revealed the basis for all her success so far – a finely-honed, rock-solid foundation in Hindustani classical music that began at the age of 6 and continues to date; the foundation that allows her to take up assignments in almost any Indian language. As she herself candidly remarked during the concert before rendering a Tamil and Telugu song, “I do not know the meaning of what I’m singing, but the song has such a wonderful melody and rhythm, so let’s all sing something that we do not know!” This was a masterstroke. Suddenly even those for whom Hindi wasn’t the native language and were perhaps a tad distanced from the proceedings (as much of her chatter was in Hindi), felt one with the rest of the audience. She laid a needless caveat – her “live” pronunciation may not be as accurate as on a record. It was perfect, with hardly a trace of accent. Naturally, she had by then also endeared herself to the Bengali audience (“Ami to hei Bengoli” – with an impish grin) with a soothingly melodious number.

Linguistic groups appeased, Shreya raked up the tempo levels with some foot-tapping energetic tracks that were nevertheless rooted in melody. Regardless of pace, there was no letting up on tonal quality, range or dynamism. Shreya took to the stage like a born-performer, something quite incredible for those who have watched her from her pre-teen years on TV. The stage could very well have been her own living room – such was the level of comfort she had with it and the musicians (who were excellent in their own right). Her exemplary stage presence came to the fore early on in the show when a lady in the audience requested, quite loudly, for a song sung by Shreya that was released just a few weeks ago (from the film Banaras – A Mystical Love Story). With a smile she said she hadn’t prepared for the song but would sing a mukhda (opening/repeating chorus of a song), if she could be helped with the lyrics. The lady, being a good sport, indeed began prompting her. Shreya upped the ante, asking her to come to the stage and help her out. There were no steps from the floor to the stage, so Shreya went on her knees, close to the lady, who prompted her with the lyrics. Her memory sufficiently jogged, Shreya rendered the song with aplomb. Such spontaneity was truly extraordinary from someone so young and performing for the first time at such a prestigious venue before a large audience. Above all, it spoke volumes about true class.

Never for a moment losing her composure or reserve, even when sportingly taking it upon herself to introduce the musicians (after the organisers fumbled badly with their names) and exhorting loud applause for her male accompanist, Ayub Patel, or when indulging in a slight sashay and shimmy to the rhythm, Shreya Ghoshal remained the epitome of grace and perfection.

Shreya Ghoshal is a typical college girl.

What makes Shreya different from the rest of her ilk is the fact that she has bagged the biggest film of the year - Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit, Aishwarya Rai and Jackie Shroff. Shreya playbacks for Aishwarya Rai (who plays Paro).

Eighteen-year-old Shreya considers herself very lucky. It is not everyday that a filmmaker like Sanjay Leela Bhansali calls you up and offers you a film. The singer, like the rest of the cast and crew, is obsessed with her debut film - she has even set her mobile phone ringtone to Bairi Piya, her song in Devdas.

Shreya, who arrived in Mumbai five years ago after spending her childhood near Kota in the northwest Indian state of Rajasthan, discloses how she bagged the coveted film: "Sa Re Ga Ma, a popular Indian television show at the time, was on the lookout for talented singers. I grabbed the opportunity and mailed my songs in a cassette. Within days, I was called to audition." She sang her way to the children's finals, where she won.

The judges, musical duo Kalyanji-Anandji were so impressed with her that Kalyanji took her under his wing and trained her for a year-and-half.

When Bhansali noticed Shreya on the show, he knew immediately that this was the voice he wanted for Paro. It had innocence.

Shreya continues, "Sanjayji tried to trace me. I remember that phone call. I could not believe that the director of Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam was on the line, asking for me. The film was such a hit, yet Sanjayji was so polite and humble. I was speechless."

Shreya was auditioned and selected. She remembers her first sitting: March 9, 2000. And the first song she recorded was Bairi Piya, "I remember I was asked to rehearse the song once before finally recording it. I simply closed my eyes and sang without a break. When I opened my eyes, I noticed a lot of excitement and chaos outside the recording room. Then Sanjayji told me I had sung the song so well that they had recorded it at one go."

The song has done very well on the Indian charts and has made Shreya very popular in her social circle. "My friends keep teasing me with, Issh [a refrain in the song]! I do not mind it."

Playbacking for Aishwarya is almost a dream come true for Shreya. She states, "I have always admired Aishwarya. I was so excited when I realised I would sing for her. I met her first on the sets of Devdas. She is so humble. I remember between shots, we would sit together, and Sanjayji would ask me to sing Lataji's (Mangeshkar) songs. Aishwarya has a ear for music, so she would join in too."

She adds, "When I sang, I imagined myself to be Paro. Just like Aishwarya. I tried to bring in the Paro's pain, confidence and innocence."

About the director, Shreya says, "I never imagined I would work with Sanjay Leela Bhansali. He guided me a lot. I was nervous initially, but the cast and crew were so good to me. Ismailji [Durbar, composer] was also very nice to me."

What is most memorable for her is the experience of singing with those she had always admired - Udit Narayan, Kavita Subramanium, Jaspinder Narula, K K and Pandit Birju Maharaj. "They encouraged me to give my best. I remember once, Uditji told me that since I had talent and luck, no one could stop me from achieving my goals. This was a great moral boost, coming from such a senior artiste."

She adds, "Kavitaji and I sang Dola re dola together. We had a great time. I kept observing her."

Shreya, who first performed at four, says her mother is an amateur classical singer and her a music aficionado. Her father, an engineer working at Mumbai's Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, took a transfer from Kota to Mumbai only to further his daughter's interests. "When Kalyanji offered to train me, I was still in Kota. He advised my father to take a transfer to Mumbai if I wanted a career in music."

Shreya also has her own plans. "I want to establish myself in the industry. Then I will cut an [independent] album. I want to come out with a new concept, break the monotony in music. Lata Mangeshkar's Meera bhajan was so out of the ordinary, a trendsetter. I too want to explore different styles of music."

For the uninitiated, Shreya Ghoshal is a high-rising star in the Indian music scene with heaps of hit numbers under her belt. Turning point in her career was when she sang for Aishwarya Rai in the movie, Devdas. Has won a few national awards and numerous other awards even before turning 20.

Of Bengali origin, Ghoshal was born on March 12, 1984 and grew up in the remote northwestern corner of Rajasthan, in the small township of Rawatbhata near the city of Kota. Her father works in Bhabha Atomic Research Center as an Engineer in the nuclear power plant by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (BARC) and mother is a postgraduate in literature. She belongs to a highly academic family.

Her early days as a singer started from the age of four. Her mother was a good singer and whenever she used to play any note on the harmonium,Shreya used to sing correctly of her own. Her father recognized her talent and decided to give her proper training. But as she was residing in an isolated place near Kota, Rajasthan. Later on she started going to Kota and started learning proper Hindustani classical music.

She auditioned for Sa Re Ga Ma, an Indian television show, and they sent her for a year and a half of training. It was here that director Sanjay Leela Bhansali discovered her and determined that she should be the voice of Paro, the heroine in his 2002 film Devdas (played on-screen by Aishwarya Rai). She began recording songs for the movie 2 years prior to the release of the film.

Moviegoers from across the world heard Ghoshal's sweet-as-honey singing voice picturised on Aishwarya Rai, and she quickly became one of the top female playback singers in Bollywood, alongside Alka Yagnik, Sadhana Sargam and Kavita Krishnamurthy. Since Devdas, she has gone on to sing for many more actresses under the baton of various music directors.

From winning accolades as a child singer to working with some of the top names in the film and music business, the journey was not very hard for Shreya as she has become an young achiever in such a short span. She targeted doing good work and has won many awards (8 awards in a single year including a National Award).

Shreya Ghoshal has completed her college education and is planning to pursue her MA in literature, a subject which she adores. She enjoys symphony and instrumental in western music and her favourite is the ABBA group. Indian music, however, is definitely her soul. Her voice has a texture that suits romantic songs and she can project voice very well (a fine example is "Jadu Hai Nasha Hai" from Jism ). She is also comfortable singing sad songs or peppy songs. She has recorded in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Bengali, and Marathi, besides Hindi.
